3 Year old children are more able to follow simple stories. Picture books are great for this age group because the children can listen to a story while looking at the pictures. 3 and 4 year olds will still enjoy activity books such as lift the flap books and noisy books but are also ready for a larger variety of books. Most children will start school when they are age 4 and will start to learn their letters and alphabet. Reading books to them and talking about the story as you go along will help them improve their language skills considerably. At this age children will start to learn that words are made up of a sequence of letters even if they don’t recognise what those letters are. At this age children still love repetition and will probably want you to read the same book over and over again. Even if you are fed up with the book, you should go with the flow a bit and try to make things more interesting by talking about the story as you go along and discussing what it happening in the pictures.
